2019–2024
BMW 3 Series
The sports sedan benchmark, now in its seventh generation.
Est. annual cost
$900–$2,000
The G20 3 Series is arguably the finest driving sedan available. The B48 and B58 engines are robust when maintained properly, but BMW's extended service intervals are optimistic — actual wear is higher. Ownership costs are 2–3× Toyota for equivalent mileage. Independent shops familiar with BMW dramatically reduce costs.
Service intervals
Recommended schedule for normal driving conditions.

| Oil change (BMW LL-01 or LL-04 approved) Only use LL-01 or LL-04 approved full synthetic. BMW's OCI recommendations are too long for US driving. | Every 7,500 miles (don't follow BMW's 10k+ recommendation) | $120–$200 (dealer) / $80–$120 (indie) | Moderate |
| Tire rotation | Every 7,500 miles | $40–$80 | Moderate |

| Transfer case fluid (xDrive) | Every 40,000 miles | $100–$180 | Moderate |

Maintenance tips
- 01
Find a quality independent BMW specialist — dealer labor at $180–$220/hour is avoidable.
- 02
Budget a separate emergency fund ($1,000–$2,000/year) for out-of-warranty BMW ownership — things will need attention.
- 03
The cooling system (water pump, thermostat, expansion tank) is a weak link on all modern BMWs — replace proactively at 80k miles.
- 04
Don't let the oil level drop below minimum — these engines are oil-consumption-positive and run lean easily.
