BMW 3 Series

The sports sedan benchmark, now in its seventh generation.

Est. annual cost

$900–$2,000

The G20 3 Series is arguably the finest driving sedan available. The B48 and B58 engines are robust when maintained properly, but BMW's extended service intervals are optimistic — actual wear is higher. Ownership costs are 2–3× Toyota for equivalent mileage. Independent shops familiar with BMW dramatically reduce costs.

Service intervals

Recommended schedule for normal driving conditions.

ServiceInterval
Oil change (BMW LL-01 or LL-04 approved)

Cabin air filter (microfilter)Every 15,000 miles
Spark plugsEvery 60,000 miles
Brake fluid flushEvery 2 years (mandatory — BMW uses ATE fluid, hygroscopic)

Transfer case fluid (xDrive)Every 40,000 miles
Coolant flushEvery 4 years

Maintenance tips

  • 01

Find a quality independent BMW specialist — dealer labor at $180–$220/hour is avoidable.

  • 02

Budget a separate emergency fund ($1,000–$2,000/year) for out-of-warranty BMW ownership — things will need attention.

  • 03

The cooling system (water pump, thermostat, expansion tank) is a weak link on all modern BMWs — replace proactively at 80k miles.

  • 04

Don't let the oil level drop below minimum — these engines are oil-consumption-positive and run lean easily.
