Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Full-size power with modern efficiency.

Est. annual cost

$600–$1,000

The T1-generation Silverado 1500 introduced the new 6.2L V8 and 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder alongside the proven 5.3L V8. The Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) cylinder deactivation system on the 5.3L has had mixed reliability — regular oil changes are especially critical.

Common issues

Known failure patterns for this model.

Active fuel management (AFM) lifter failure

Urgent

Symptoms: Ticking/tapping, rough running, misfires on cylinder 1-4

Typical repair cost: $2,500–$4,500

Transmission shudder (10L80 at low speeds)

Monitor

Symptoms: Vibration when accelerating from 25–40 mph

Typical repair cost: $0–$300 (fluid flush often resolves)

Maintenance tips

  • 01

5.3L owners: the AFM system's lifters are the known weak point. Consider an AFM disabler (DOD disabler) and regular use of ZDDP-enhanced oil additives.

  • 02

Always use GM dexos1 Gen2 or better oil — other oils won't lubricate the AFM components properly.

  • 03

If towing over 5,000 lbs regularly, use the 'severe' service interval for all fluids, not the normal schedule.
